The power of Space and Place.
If you can, pick a spot in your home, even if it's a studio apartment that you go to each time you meditate. Make you location consistent and make it meditation friendly!
One really cool, powerful thing about meditation is that it can be done absolutely anywhere, with no outside resources whatsoever to bring calm to your mind and re-center yourself.
However, it is really nice to have some things to aid us on this journey.
When I meditate at home, I lay down by our open patio door with the company of a breeze and the chirping birds. I rest my neck on a denneroll I got from my chiropractor, this is a cervical support/adjustment pillow that keeps my spine aligned and feeling really good. I'm supposed to lay on it for at least 10 minutes a day. Being asked to commit to 10 minutes laying on this pillow on a flat surface, so not my bed, seemed impossible to me at first, so I started incorporating that self-care need with my meditation self-care need and I love it! I get to accomplish two things at once and feel absolutely amazing afterward. :)
If you don't have a chiropractor, you can get inexpensive variations of the denneroll like this one, or this foam one looks amazing, and this version can also be used for hip flexor stretches which is massively important.
If you prefer seated meditation, meditation pillows are the way to go. Not only are you comfortable but you are creating habit by using a consistent place as well as muscle memory. Your body and mind will recognize as you approach your meditation space that it is about to get some quality self-care and will settle into the practice much more quickly.
I haven't tried this fancy, ergonomic meditation chair yet but it looks incredible, I definitely want to get one of these someday, it gets rave reviews and looks really neat. If you try it out, will you let me know how it goes in the comments?
Besides creating a consistent and comfortable meditation area in your home, make it beautiful!
Make it a place that you cannot wait to go the next day, that you won't forget, neglect, ignore or put-off. You wake up in the morning and you go straight to this beautiful, peace inducing place, you come home from work and go to this safe, healing space. Make it aesthetic, make it special. Does that mean you hang art you love this area? Maybe have a plant or some twinkle lights?
We won't always be on a beach or in the mountains or have the most beautiful balcony to use, so we must make the best space we can with what we have!
Sounds and smells significantly impact human emotion. I highly recommend having some incense, soy candles or essential oil aromatherapy in your meditation space. These scent based triggers will help your mind and body go to its peaceful place joyfully and quickly!
Lastly, choose what you hear.
If you prefer a guided meditation, you can use apps like "Calm" or "Headspace" that offer some free sessions. Or play some soothing, non-invasive music with no words and of course, please make sure your phone notifications are OFF, we do not want that distracting you and pulling away from this wonderful time. Perhaps silence is all you would like, in that case, if you have a quiet neighborhood, simply leave your ears alone and embrace the surrounding sounds. However, if the noise is disruptive, wear a noise cancelling headset, or put some basic ear plugs in, even just putting your regular music ear buds in with no music will help drown out the noise.
